Lupus

Lupus is an autoimmune disease, meaning your immune system attacks your own healthy cells. An autoantibody actually does this. An autoantibody acts against cells of the body in which it was formed. For reasons that are as yet unknown, lupus causes inflammation of and possible damage to the tissues in the joints, skin, kidneys, bones, heart, lungs, blood vessels and the brain.

Researchers are not sure why, but nine out of every ten people who have lupus are women. It typically strikes between the ages of 15 and 45. There seem to be environmental and genetic factors that predispose an individual to lupus, but the exact cause of the disease is still unknown. Lupus has often been called "the great imitator" because its symptoms mimic those of other diseases and syndromes.

Home Medical Equipment for Lupus Patients

The symptoms are so numerous and varied that it would be impossible to predict the medical equipment needs of someone with lupus. Depending on the range and severity of symptoms, patients might need walking aids, wheelchairsbathing and toileting devices, daily living aids, respiratory equipment, etc.
